Word of Mouth Marketing

26 06 2008

One of my favourite videos that’s been kicking around for a while is “How to Sell Soap” by a viral company in Berlin, Germany. It’s such a simple explanation about why viral works. A lot of people try to overcomplicate viral marketing, and it’s really a very simple concept. Friends trust friends, and word of mouth is stronger than any form of advertising could ever hope to be.

Enjoy the vid…

It’s a cute video. I find however that by pointing out the follies of other media, you are less likely to convert somebody to the one that you are selling. Instead of saying that broadcast is ineffective, expensive, time consuming, resource crippling and a crap-shoot, maybe say… We will test the results of this $10 WOM social media campaign against the results of your $100 broadcast campaign and see where next you should invest. Clients like to hear how to improve, but they have a hard time accepting they have been wrong all these years.

That’s my 2 cents… keep the change :-)

Yeah I agree with you there… They are a viral agency so I guess their whole angle was “lets slag the traditional media and get more business”.

Traditional media still has it’s place and likely always will, especially for branding, specifically global brands.

Thanks for visiting my lil’ blog by the way! :)
